: I am wondering what people think of round bales v. square bales for feeding horses. I have a 15 acre field I would like to plant in hay. I have inside storage for some of the hay but could not store the whole crop. Could I get by with round bales? Or would they mildew too much and make the horses sick? I understand round bales are much less labor intensive.

: Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

I currently use round bales for my horses due to lack of storage for square bales. I live in North Central Texas. I have not had any problems. If there is some mildew on the bottom, I remove that small bit of hay. The real problem is not being able to control how much a horse will eat of it. I have one mare who will stand by it all day.
